The Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership exists to conserve and sustain the special landscape of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Traditional farming has shaped this landscape and is vital to maintaining it, which is why we are committed to supporting and promoting the local food and drink sector and other local products. To find out more about the AONB and our work please go to www.shropshirehillsaonb.co.uk.
Local products are those which are grown, reared or made in the area, and distributed through local supply chains and outlets. The Shropshire Hills is mainly a livestock area with a rich heritage in meat production and Ludlow has an unrivalled reputation as a centre for local produce. The area is also developing a strong creative sector, with wood, crafts and a wide variety of non-food products.
This website aims to help narrow the gap between producers, processors and consumers. By providing a searchable directory on where you can source local produce and relevant background information, we hope you will be able to make more informed decisions with regard to your choice of local products. Our recent work to support the development of farmers' markets around the Shropshire Hills has shown that there is an increasing demand from both consumers and businesses such as pubs, restaurants and B&Bs for information on local sourcing. We hope the website will be a valuable resource to help to support this trend. Do let us know how you get on, and any comments you may have to webmanager@shropshirehills-buylocal.co.uk
All businesses listed on this website have declared their sources of local produce and confirmed their understanding of locally produced products. We have asked them to provide us with information concerning food or environmental schemes they may be part of, to help inform consumers about their production practices.
The website also highlights businesses who through our Sustainable Business Scheme are committed to becoming more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable. The Shropshire Hills 'buy local - be sustainable' stamp will identify those businesses helping build a brighter future for us all.
The 'buy local' website has been developed jointly by the Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership and the Ludlow 21 Food & Farming Group, with financial support from Natural England and South Shropshire District Council and Shropshire County Council through the South Shropshire Opportunity Fund.
