Carding Mill Valley

Carding Mill Valley

The valley provides excellent access to the Long Mynd with superb walking in peaceful countryside with delightful streams. Extensive and beautiful area of upland heath with beautiful heather covered upland heath.

The great ridge of The Long Mynd dominate the borderlands of South Shropshire. Its steep narrow batches and hollows (as the valleys are locally called) with purple projections of vertical Precambrian rock dissect this isolated heather and bilberry moorland of common grazing land.

The Long Mynd covers an area of nearly 1295 hectares (5 square miles), of which The National Trust owns 5,850 acres, and reaches its highest point of 517 metres (1,595 ft) AOD at Pole Bank (OS National Grid Reference: SO415945).

The majority of the Long Mynd in the Trust's ownership was acquired by public subscription in 1965. 25 acres in the Batch were added in 1978 and 250 acres in Carding Mill Valley in 1979.

The Long Mynd is a Biological and Geological SSSI. It lies within the Shropshire Hills AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). This is a national designation to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape.

The site includes an Edwardian tea room in the heart of the famous Carding Mill Valley. Much of the food and drink is sourced from withiin the Shropshire Hills.
